SKIN 101

Before I get to why it is so important to make your own products or at least understand the ingredients and make sure they are safe for you to use, here is a quick overview of Skin 101:
Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Our skin is elastic, flexible yet tough enough to withstand environmental influences. It is protecting our body from germs, viruses, and from cold / heat. We are "wearing" our skin our entire life and not only is the skin guarding our body and our organs, but it is constantly repairing and renewing itself. Our skin has two important layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the waterproof, protective layer with the dermis lying underneath and providing support and cushioning to the body. Blood vessels in the dermis transport nourishment to and waste from its own cells as well as to and from the epidermis.
That said, whatever you put on your skin will be absorbed by your body through the blood vessels in your skin.

In making your own body creams or understanding that it is important that whatever you put on your skin is safe to use, you can ensure that your are giving your skin the necessary nourishment it needs to continue to protect you. "Many chemicals in cosmetics don't cause obvious signs of toxicity on the skin but slowly poison us thorough repeated use" (EcoVoice)

The recipes on this site are for creams that are made with natural ingredients. The creams that you will be able to make are gentle to be used daily whether in the morning, at night, or during the day, for sensitive skin, and have a moisturizing effect. Almond oil has a very slow absorption time and serves great as moisturizer. Essential oils not only add a nice scent to your creams but they also have soothing, relaxing, or stimulating qualities.

Your homemade body products not only make the perfect "gift" to yourself but they also make great gifts to your family and friends.
